At Musicians Ltd, we are incredibly proud to have been a registered Trinity examination centre for almost 25 years. Over the decades, we have guided hundreds of students through Trinity music exams, and more recently, we have expanded to offer Trinity Acting examinations as well.
But one question we are often asked by parents is:
“Should my child focus on exams… or performances?”
The answer is simple: They need both.
While exams and performances may look similar on the surface — preparing pieces, building confidence, working towards a goal — they actually develop very different (and equally important) skills. Let’s explore why both matter in a child’s musical journey.
The Value of Trinity Exams
Trinity exams provide structure, measurable progress, and clear benchmarks for development.
When a student prepares for a Trinity exam, they are learning far more than just three pieces of repertoire. They are developing:
- Technical control and vocal/instrumental technique
- Musical accuracy and interpretation
- Aural skills and musicianship
- Discipline and focused practice habits
- Goal-setting and long-term commitment
Exams teach students how to refine details. They learn how to polish, adjust, improve, and strive for precision. This kind of focused preparation builds resilience and work ethic — skills that extend beyond music lessons.
There is also something powerful about working towards an external qualification. For many students, receiving their Trinity certificate is a milestone moment. It represents dedication, growth, and achievement. And now, with our Trinity Acting examinations also underway, students are able to gain formal recognition not only for their musical skills but for their dramatic training as well. Exams build technical excellence.
The Magic of Performance
While exams build precision, performances build presence.
Whether it’s our Annual Scholarship Fundraiser, end-of-term recitals, musical theatre annual productions, or community performances, stepping onto a stage is a completely different experience.
Performance teaches students:
- How to connect with an audience
- How to manage nerves in real time
- How to recover from mistakes gracefully
- How to collaborate as part of a cast or ensemble
- How to tell a story
There is an energy in live performance that cannot be replicated in an exam room. The adrenaline, the applause, the shared experience — these moments build confidence in a way that stays with children for life.
Some students thrive in structured exam settings. Others light up the moment stage lights hit their face. Most discover that they are capable of both. Performance builds confidence and communication.
Why Choosing One Isn’t the Answer
Occasionally, parents wonder if their child should “just do exams” to focus on grades, or “just perform” to avoid pressure, but removing one element often limits growth.
A student who only performs may miss out on developing the discipline and technical depth that exams encourage. A student who only takes exams may miss out on the expressive freedom, joy, and audience connection that performance brings.
At Musicians Ltd, our philosophy has always been to nurture well-rounded performers. We want our students to be technically secure, emotionally expressive, confident, and resilient.
Exams and performances complement each other beautifully. Exams give students the tools. Performances give them the confidence.
Building Confident, Capable Young Performers
Over nearly 25 years as a Trinity centre, we have seen first-hand how powerful this balance can be.
We’ve watched shy beginners grow into confident soloists.
We’ve seen exam candidates discover a love for the spotlight.
We’ve seen stage stars gain discipline through structured exam preparation.
There is no single “right path” in the performing arts. Every child’s journey looks slightly different. But when we combine structured assessment with exciting performance opportunities, we give children the strongest foundation possible.
